Men from our parish
attend a retreat each year at the White House Retreat House, located in south
St. Louis County. The facilities are situated in a spacious nature setting
overlooking the Mississippi River. It is not uncommon to see deer and wild
turkey when out walking or making the Stations of the Cross. Noise from
automobile and air traffic is virtually non-existent.
The retreat consists of a
series of conferences given by one of the Jesuit Priest Community. Silence is
observed except for an optional time for fellowship after the evening meal. The
retreat follows the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius Loyola. There is ample
time for rest, reflection, prayer, and meeting with Priests from the Jesuit
Staff. It is truly a journey with the Lord in a renewal of mind, spirit, and
body.
The St. Joseph Parish
Group making the White House Retreat in September of this year were: Don
Bailey, Harold Barks, Dan Barry, Bob Boedeker, Hal Costello, Paul Gialanella,

"An annual White
House Retreat to me, means a weekend spent quietly and almost exclusively with
God. I consider that to be a privilege and a real blessing from
God." (Harold Barks, 30 year
White House Retreatant."
"I had wanted to go on a
White House retreat for years. I have 5 boys ages 5 10, so this time
when the opportunity came up, a silent retreat sounded like a great
idea
and it was. The beautiful surroundings provide an excellent
opportunity to reflect, re-prioritize, and revitalize. My retreat was just that
for me. It was likely the most important thing I did all year. I will be
recommending a White House retreat to all the Catholic men I know."
(Richard Middeke, A first time White
House Retreatant.)
