Kindergarten at St. Joseph School
The Kindergarten at St. Joseph School provides a half-day or a full day, child-centered program of instruction. We emphasize the uniqueness of each student and strive to actively engage all students in their learning. Class size is limited to no more than 25 students. The kindergarten team consists of four full-time teachers, an instructional aide/encore teacher and a full-time instructional aide.

Along with our curriculum of readiness skills, Reading, Math, and Religion, our children attend several Encore classes, including Art, Music, Computer, and Physical Education. With a strong home-school partnership and a Christian values-based atmosphere, we strive for the academic success of all of our students.

PRIMARY GRADES
The primary program at St. Joseph School is based on the teachings of Jesus and lived Gospel values. Religion is studied as a subject and also is integrated into other subjects and woven into school life. Our curriculum is language-based with an emphasis on individual learning styles.

Hands-on learning opportunities foster growth and development. The core curriculum consists of reading, language arts, mathematics, religion, social studies, and science. Primary students also participate in encore classes--art, music, computer, and physical education classes. Through the balanced literacy program students participate in word study, guuided reading, writing, and self-selected reading activities.

Students begin the Accelerated Reading program in third grade and select books to meet their interests and reading levels. The students benefit from the use of the primary science lab as a part of the science curriculum. A strong home and school connection exists to create a positive environment in which the children can grow.

INTERMEDIATE SCHOOL
The Intermediate level of St. Joseph School includes students in the fourth and the fifth grades. The adolescent at this age is seeking more independence and has a need for greater mobility. To accommodate these needs students begin to have a variety of teachers for core subjects. More independence and responsibility for learning are transferred to the students. Students study language arts, reading, and mathematics with their homeroom teachers and then rotate to other teachers of the grade level for religion, science, and social studies. Students participate in art, computer, and music once a week and physical education twice a week. Beginning in fourth grade, students may participate in the band program. A twenty-five minute recess at lunch time gives the students time to release energy and socialize with peers. In fifth grade, students have the opportunity to participate in the Scripps Howard Spelling Bee, the National Geographic Bee and the D.A.R.E. Program.

MIDDLE SCHOOL
Our St. Joseph Middle School is made up of the sixth, seventh and eighth grade students. Students pursue the core curriculum of religion, reading, language arts, mathematics, science, and social studies. Encore offerings include art, band, computer, music, and physical education. Eighth-grade students may also select advanced art, advanced computer, French, or service.

In order to keep up with our continuous improvement for increased student achievement, and after much research, St. Joseph Middle School implemented block scheduling during the 1997-98 school year. Students attend 90 minute classes Monday through Thursday (alternating subjects on these days), then on Friday, they have all classes for 45 minutes of instruction.

We have found many benefits from the block schedule. It provides additional instruction time and supports interdisciplinary experiences. It allows in-depth, uninterrupted experiences resulting in less lesson fragmentation and encourages cooperative learning, problem solving, decision making, research, discovery learning and hands-on projects. The block schedule eliminates unnecessary, unstructured passing times between classes and provides increased individualized teacher-student interaction.

Our Middle School students have two practice labs each week. These are study halls, that also allow students to sign out for the Library, make up tests or classwork, or see a teacher for extra help with a subject. We also have DEAR (Drop Everything And Read) time twice a week.

Our students participate in all-school Mass once a week. We also have an activity period each week. Students select from a variety of activities in which to participate. Examples of some activities are Intramurals, Band, Brain Puzzlers, Scrap booking, Student Council, Swing Dancing, etc.
